MODERN ART LANDSCAPES.
Modern and
contemporary landscapes 2023. PAINTINGS.
"The landscape in modern art. The emotion
when contemplating the nature, the sea, the sky, the stars; the green trees of
the vast meadows, the graceful sailboats that almost fly over the blue sea; the
sun that illuminates everything, the roads of villages, towns and distant
cities. The painter filters his sensations, exalts his experience
with Mother Nature and deposits everything carefully on the canvas so that the
viewer feels it in his eyes and in his heart through art."
"The great landscape painters of Art
History, the most famous artists who left their mark on me: William Turner,
Constable, Patinir, Sorolla, Canaletto, JoaquÃn Mir, Van Gogh, Monet, Pisarro,
Matisse, Derain, Bruegel, El Bosco, Cezanne, Sisley, Miró, BenjamÃn Palencia,
Klimt, David Hockney ... and many more" ©

COLD
"Sometimes I
despair with avant-garde art, cold, nihilistic, presumptuous. Even much of the
realist art is traversed by a glacial helor that is scary because it is
sometimes reactionary. Nor do I feel any mercy for the naturalists,
impressionists, expressionists and modern surrealists in which sugar is the only
ingredient. Painting, where are you?" © Jose Manuel Merello

EXCUSES
"A still life
?, a landscape ?, a nude ?, an abstraction ?, a portrait? A flower, a moon, a
vase, a turquoise sea, a leafy tree, green eyes, blue, sallow, black eyes. A
horse ?, a sparrow ?. What difference does it make?, they are whims, they are
simply excuses to PAINT." ©

THE ORIGIN
"The painting always comes back. In fact, it never left. It is like the longing
for the countryside, the organic stable, the smell of wet ground that shakes our
souls when, suddenly, we wake up lucidly amidst the noise and din of any absurd
contemporary city. Painting is the return; we leave again and again but she is
always there, to the rescue. The Painting is Altamira: THE ORIGIN." ©

UGLY COLORS
"There is no ugly color, There is no beautiful one either. If
harmony exists, even the saddest of colors shines imperiously like the sun."
FEELING?
"Do not fool yourself. The feeling, by its own,
is useless in painting (or in any art.) It is the refined technique and the deep
knowledge of the internal mechanisms of the painting that makes it work. This
way, the painting shows itself, with all its wild feelings" ©

CATHEDRALS
"The painting is to
build, and to build is to delimit, to cement, to compensate and to ponder to
find a balance; to build is to hoist, to raise step by step until you raise an
idea. To build is to germinate and edify, from the bottom to the top, from the
inside to the outside, the seed of the human soul by using the most refined
technique. Painting is to raise a Cathedral."
THE ART OF
PAINTING
"The Painting is the Dance of the brush, the still Theater of an event, the
Architecture of the composition, the Music of the color, the Literature of the
shape and its mystery, the Sculpture of the trapped time ... THE PAINTING IS THE
ART."
"Painting is what you can do with colors, shapes and textures over
a two-dimensional space. The rest is ok: Installations, Performances, Video Art,
even Haute Couture. Everything is perfect, but they are not Painting. They are
not THE ART OF PAINTING."
THIRST AND RESPIRATION
"The paint is like an unctuous cream that you spread on the thirsty skin of the
painting. If you exceed, the painting does not breathe; If you always remain
short the thirst does not go out."
"Good painting can never be boring, or
repetitive. It does not matter if it is hyperrealistic, expressionist or popart
painting. Boredom is an unequivocal sign of lack of creativity; it is darkness
and the worst denial of ART."
"In my painting, abstraction always manages
to be figuration."

FAMOUS LANDSCAPE ARTISTS OF ALL TIMES.
Vincent Van Gogh (1853 - 1890): The powerful
management of perspective. Colorful, impeccable, passionate. Thick brush, exact,
he paints drawing. Structure and composition with few elements but in their
rightful place, without unnecessary distractions. Van Gogh uses a deep, bright,
elegant color. He is the culmination of nineteenth-century landscaping, and
opens the door to Fauves and Expressionists of the twentieth century.

William Turner (1775 - 1851): The magnificence, the splendor of
pure painting, of the living sky, of the instant, of the flow of the sun in the
sunset. Turner, the great watercolorist, the most modern painter of his time.
The smoke, the roar of the ships crossing the illuminated clouds. A sublime
technique at the service of the most exalted and symphonic landscape.

Gustav Klimt (1862 - 1918): The landscapes of Klimt are an explosion of flowers, petals, pistils, stamens, chlorophyll; a universe full of springtime galaxies, perfect constellations with surprising richness and harmony. A short perspective is enough for Klimt, it does not need distances, foggy horizons, skies, mountains or mountain ranges. A few trees and a meadow with fresh flowers are enough for him to build a wonderful ode to nature. An orderly and exact nature. Klimt, the gardener architect. © Jose Manuel Merello
Joachim Patinir (1483 - 1524): The extensive celestial plains with a storm as a destination. A precursor of surrealism, of the dreamlike landscapes of Salvador Dalì and Magritte ... many centuries before. The delight of stately blue, deep, emeralds. The prodigious technique of Patinir is a vibrant point in the purest landscape, with unprecedented perspectives, with details of a fantastic tale. Lost villages, wooded with millions of leaves of perfect botany. Patinir, a landscape of magnifying glass and microscope. © Jose Manuel Merello
Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954): It is very difficult to be a landscape artist beyond Impressionism. Except for the landscapes of the surrealist movement, which always leaves a space for any new reality, the modern artistic trends of the 20th century are slowly narrowing the horizon that all landscapes need. There is a parenthesis of several decades in which landscape painting practically disappears. Neither Picasso, nor Warhol, nor Basquiat, nor Hopper, nor so many greats of the twentieth century developed the landscape within their work. Until the arrival of hyperrealism, the landscape is disdained as a minor art, as a painting that is little or nothing conceptual; the landscape, -like children, animals, still lifes, vases, the human figure, the nude ...- is simply marginalized. But there is one fabulous exception: Henri Matisse. He, from his balconies, (and a few others like him, Raoul Dufy for example) leaves us surprising landscapes, almost always tied to the city, to the windows from where they are observed. Matisse turns the landscape into another object of the still life. Paradoxically, Nature is integrated as one more element of the still life or of the interior, one more piece of the still life. That is why I value Henri Matisse's contribution to the landscape so much. During the few decades that he cultivated the landscape genre he managed to be an exterior painter from the interior and the landscape, since then, it is a fabulous window that unites the two worlds inhabited by the human being. Matisse, inside and outside. © Jose Manuel Merello
